Fabulous & rare antique French Belle Epoque era sterling silver framed 4 1/8" vanity jar or table snuff box, an elegant casket in richly burled hardwood and with an 18k gold on sterling silver "vermeil" interior liner! Isn't this one gorgeous! I love it, if only I could think of a real reason to keep all of these pieces that I fall in love with. Something about it, the elegance of the richly burled wood is attractive enough but then add the ornate French sterling silver framing and interior, the lid accented with laurel garland bands and acanthus. Beautiful! Nice large size, too, at just over 4" in diameter. Hmmm, what to use it for right? I always end up just enjoying these antique boxes for the works of art that they are, great as coffee table or desk top decorative accents for sure. The silver marked with the French Minerve or Minerva hallmarks top and bottom, the tiny number "1" within those marks means it's in .950 silver (95% pure and higher than the .925 standard for "sterling" silver). The silversmith marks are for Limousine & Souche, Paris circa 1905-1925.
Very good condition. There is a large age/drying split in the bottom portion of the box but that's just an unfortunate 'natural' flaw. Also, the sterling exterior framing has the remnants of a vermeil finish but with mostly the silver showing now. See pictures for all measurements.
