Rare find! This stunning album has hand carved wooden front and back covers, with a still-supple leather binding and all of its thick pages still nicely within. More than half the pages are filled with the old carte de visite photos, c. 1860s and many feature gentlemen in top hats, or with top hat; ladies in their finest attire; beautiful children and lovely character-filled older folks, all in those distinctive c.1860s 2" x 4" paper photos, the first paper photos available in history to the public.
Very good to excellent for age and type. This is an old album! And yet its covers have no warp, the latches are fine. The leather binding shows wear, of course, since it's going on 200 years old, but it isn't split and it is holding well. The album is from the Black Forest carvers, but has a lovely Country French feel to it. Some people, I realize, cut out the interior and turn these into boxes fitted for an heirloom pistol or to hold their family's heirloom letters. We like them just left as albums. Oh how I wish I had one filled with photos from my own family's Swiss, Danish, English families. You might find these have identifications on back and that they might become important in the building up of family history sites that are so popular today, like Family Search, if your hobby is genealogy. There must be about 35- 50 photos in this one, though I didn't count so not promising exactly.

If you've followed us for a while you know I'm a big fan of the old hand carved "Black Forest" items that come to us from 19th century Switzerland, Germany, parts of France and Italy, where they pleased the Grand Tour tourists and still please us all today. These hand carved treasures range from whimsical small bears to large and elaborate mantel clocks, wall clocks, wall plaques showing the most awesome anatomical studies of stag, fowl, "fruits of the hunt". I've got more to list so look through the vast collection. I've just used quite a few piece in our own 2nd home decoration , Rocky Mountains location, and love the look as well as the heritage since my own ancestors hail from that region and others. The pieces work well in Country Manor, French Country, Ski Lodge or Hunt Lodge and even in a den or office. Everything from a pocket watch case to huge plaques - from needle and thread holders to cigar caddy - these decorative objects survive today a testament to the artisan's craft of carving wood.
