Fabulous & rare antique Victorian era Italian Sorrento Ware style scroll cut 16 5/8" tall folding sheet music stand, free-standing or wall hanging decorative piece with oval mirror, ornate reticulated or pierced framework, SIX figural inlay medallions and mosaic style marquetry inlay bands! WOW! Amazing, all I can think about when looking at this one, other than how superb the craftsmanship is, is "how in the world did this relatively fragile work of art survive so unblemished over the past 100 or so years"? HUGE, the piece stands 16 5/8" tall and the folding sides open to a width of 14 5/8"! A truly rare and remarkable piece. Six unique figural medallions, all created by precisely cut veneers of varying colors and inlayed into the darker walnut veneer ovals. To be honest, I'm not completely sure of the original purpose of the piece. There is a thin folding shelf at the bottom that lends itself to the idea that it would hold single or a thin collection of larger papers, i.e. sheet music. The mirror making it a lovely decorative piece as it is, no need to know the original purpose :). The back has the original folding easel stand, adjustable so the angle of the facade can be set to your preference OR, there is a hang ring so it can be wall mounted/displayed. Fantastic!
Very good condition, age & materials considered. There has obviously been some loss to the reticulated top center of the piece, it would likely have been peaked at the center and attached to those side scroll segments. Unfortunate but amazing that the loss or breakage is confined to that one spot. Some age/drying splits in a place or two and a thin veneer split or two possible but all is as you can see in the images, wonderfully cared for and preserved over the years. A treasure and fabulous decorative accent! See pictures for all measurements.
