Charming antique French Napoleon III or Victorian era 11" tall desk top stand or "vide poche", (vide poche is translated literally to "empty pocket", and describes this fun item since it is into the vide poche that one empties one's pocket watch, coins, jewelry and pocket items for the night). A sail boat or tall ship with mother of pearl shell hull, sail & base, Serves also as a pocket watch holder if you wish to use too rigging as the hanging hook. This one has a glorious array of twisted ormolu wire rigging. These were made (usually much smaller) for the Grand Tour tourist trade and were souvenirs of the seaport towns and beaches of France, 19th century to as late as 1910. For the sailing OR inkwell enthusiasts, this little treasure stands 11" tall at the mast and is 8.5" in length - large and impressive. In the form of an old sailboat or tall ship, there is one shimmering pearl half shells cut into the shape of sail, the hull of the ship is formed by a half shell, another smaller half shell acts as the stand or base. Lovely decorative accents these.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. No breaks to the elaborate brass wire and riggings, framework, and one tiny chip to the tip of just one of those 4 beautiful high pearlescent sails, and no other chips to be found. This one even has an anchor and a steering mechanism (I don't know the parts of a ship, sorry), Measures 11" tall, 8.5" long and 3.25" wide.
