Museum quality 19th century Napoleon III/Victorian papier mache ecritoire, writing box or lap desk with magnificent serpentine shaping and ornate hand painted & mother of pearl decoration! Ooops, I forgot to add the rare large size of this one. A truly exceptional piece, but then that's what you've come to expect from us and don't we just love finding these gorgeous treasures! Possibly an unmarked Jennens & Bettridge piece, the layered lid panel and opulent gilt enamel are the main clues. Nice large size, too...perfect as the centerpiece in a fine grouping of antique boxes :).
Very good condition! A repaired chip to the front right foot and just near the right side hinge but in overall remarkable shape. Not as tough as solid wood, one of the drawbacks of papier mache was that it chipped & broke quite a bit easier and that makes it all the more rare when such an old piece is in this fine of condition. There is a split through the center of the red velvet writing surface (at the hinge). No inkwells and the center pen tray insert (really just a papier mache board with a convex center) is missing. See pictures for measurements.
