Exceptional & rare antique French c. 1809-1819 Napoleon I to Louis XVIII era sterling silver oversized chocolate, coffee or tea cup with Empire style SWAN figural handle & engraved decoration, heavy at 233 grams and in wonderful condition! Truly magnificent for a relatively commonly used article, overly thick old French silver and immense visual appeal! The handle and base bear old French hallmarks including the Coq and Diana marks, the tiny number "1" within those marks means they're in .950 silver (95% pure and higher than the .925 standard for sterling silver. The silversmith marks are clearly legible but, being as old as they are, I'm having trouble finding a reference but will continue to research and add them when I find them. A gorgeous old piece here, long elegant swan neck handle, curling at the base and morphing into a leaf where it joins the cup. Bead festooned and reticulated base and the body of the cup with engraved scrolling decoration culminating in two swans and fountain with cattails at the center opposite the handle. Superb, don't miss it.
Very good condition. There is some darkened spots visible in the sides, some light surface marks and there was a shield shaped cartouche with monogram engraved in one side that looks like an attempt to remove it has been made. Still visible though. There also may be an old silver solder repair at the base of the handle, the spot visible from the inside of the cup but this could be an original aspect of the making of the piece. There's also a bit of bending to portions of the reticulated band in the base. See pictures for weight and all measurements.
