Fabulous large antique French or Swiss rosewood & marquetry inlaid 11 3/8" grand piano shaped jewelry box, rare with carved bone keys, turned & carved legs, musical themed lid inlay and working Breather, Swiss music box inside! If you ask me, the box itself is a French Napoleon III era Palais Royal style work, the elegant rosewood veneers & lighter fruitwood strip and marquetry inlays have all of the hallmarks of an early piece. Possibly would even have held a fitted tray inside with carved mother of pearl Palais Royal sewing implements?? The bone piano keys and reticulated scroll cut also harken of that period. So,with that in mind, the inside music box is by Breitler SA of Switzerland, a company who didn't begin manufacturing until 1929. My guess is that it's a replacement for an older music box that stopped working but I've priced it as if it's antique to vintage so someone will be getting this spectacular piece for a 'song'. Forgive the pun. The jewelry compartment lined in a pale blue silk or satin fabric. A truly wonderful piece, exceptional as a decorative accent for all of us Classical music and/or antique French box enthusiasts. Don't miss it!
Very good to excellent condition. With a nod to the music box possibly being a replacement. There is a small section of the veneer missing from the right side of the piano keys and a very slight upward bend to the piano lid at the front right corner above the keys. There is a split in the bottom wood panel, from a mounting screw on the music mechanism. The music box does work but is not controlled by the lifting or closing of the lid. See pictures for all measurements.
