Lovely & rare matched pair of antique Victorian era 10.25" tall gutta percha picture frames, each with an ornate spiral fluted pattern with ornate floral & ribbon accents, original backs with easel stands and wonderful condition! We've had a few truly superb old Victorian gutta percha pieces over the years and this pair definitely falls into that category. Rare to find a matched pair and with such a lovely style. Gutta percha or gutta-percha refers to the forerunner of today's plastic, a very dense & heavy substance derived from Malaysian trees that resembles rubber but contains more resin and so creates a hard, durable end product. Invented in the 19th c. and used for these gorgeous old picture frames, inkwells & stands and more but most notably in the telecommunications industry. A truly fabulous pair here, don't miss them!
Very good to excellent condition. One has the original slightly convex glass insert, the other with a later flat glass replacement. I see no chips, cracks, damage or repairs though there may be a tiny nip or two. See pictures for measurements.
