Exquisite & rare antique French Napoleonic era sterling silver 13.75" oil & vinegar cruet stand and 4pc open salt, condiment or sweet meats set with 1798-1809 hallmarks and gorgeous Empire style with regal lion's head & paw figural legs, partially nude tambourine dancer figure supports and all in fabulous condition! Rare to find singles in these 200+ year old sterling treasures, much less a comprehensive matching set like you see here! The set consists first of a large oil & vinegar cruet or caddy, the fixture with the raised center handle decorated with figural busts, a Louis XVI style lion's head medallion and double cornucopias with fruit & foliage. The four open salts all with the those lovely female figures as the legs, holding a tambourine in one hand and a bunch of grapes aloft in the other. Reticulated bands encircle the base and tops of the fixtures, the salt pieces each have wheel cut glass or crystal inserts though they don't all match and are likely partial replacements (very common in pieces of this age). All separate pieces bear the 1798-1809 "Coq" and Moyenne hallmarks, the number "1" within the coq mark means that they're all in .950 silver (95% pure and higher than the .925 standard for "sterling" silver). The silversmith marks are for Jean-Pierre Bibron, 3 rue Harley, Paris circa 1798. RARE and OLD, from the time of Napoleon Bonaparte himself! A magnificent, museum quality ensemble, don't miss it!
Very good condition. Some age tarnish here and there but no notable damage other than a slight bend in a place or two. As noted, It is possible that some or all glass/crystal inserts are replacements, one never really knows with pieces this old but they match and work just fine. One of the inserts has a chipped rim. The decanters in the cruet stand appear to be original but I'm pretty sure the stoppers are later replacements. They fit but not with the exactness that would surely have been present originally. Also, there is a crack around the bottom handle attachment on one decanter, visible as darkened but it doesn't leak and appears to be solid/stable and will work just fine. See pictures for all weights and measurements.
