Elegant & rare 38pc antique French Belle Epoque era table knife & serving utensil set with gorgeous Empire style hallmarked French silver caps & collars (or ferules) with silver monogram inlaid ebony or ebonized wood handles! Aren't these fabulous, as beautiful and classically French as can be! We often get email inquiries for fine sets of antique knives to go with our, or existing, antique sterling silver flatware sets and so are always keeping our feelers out for wonderful sets. Here's one, nothing overly frilly really but the set is comprehensive, though missing a few of the larger dinner sized knives. As it is, this is a complete 3pc table setting or service for eight to nine and in fine condition given their age! There are 9pc dinner knives, 12pc luncheon or entremet knives, 12pc sterling silver bladed dessert or cheese knives and then the five larger serving pieces that include a meat knife & fork, gigot and salad fork & spoon. Lovely ebony or ebonized wood handles and you can't beat the sterling accents at the collars and inlay, looks like an interlaced "CC" monogram. The blades are all the original pre-stainless steel ones, all marked "Artier-Prodon a Thiers" and "Med D'Or" for "Gold Medal", likely earned at one of the Paris World Expositions (Paris circa 19th c.). The silver bladed knives have silversmith marks for Louis Legrand, Paris circa 1905-1928. The steel blades do have some age staining and/or corrosion that you find on these old steel. Of course, one could have them re-bladed if so desired but I tend to like the old marks, gives them character and more of a storied history. A fabulous set, don't miss them!
Very good condition, age considered. There are a few thin, small age or drying cracks in the wood handles but no lost monogram inlays, no lifting to any that I can see. As noted, the blades are pre-stainless so they do have some visible age/corrosion marks but are still perfectly usable. See pictures for all weights and measurements.
