If you've followed us for a while you know I'm a big fan of the old hand carved "Black Forest" items that come to us from 19th century Switzerland, Germany, parts of France and Italy, where they pleased the Grand Tour tourists and still please us all today. These hand carved treasures range from whimsical small bears to large and elaborate mantel clocks, wall clocks, wall plaques showing the most awesome anatomical studies of stag, fowl, "fruits of the hunt". I've got more to list so look through the vast collection. I've just used quite a few piece in our own 2nd home decoration , Rocky Mountains location, and love the look as well as the heritage since my own ancestors hail from that region and others. The pieces work well in Country Manor, French Country, Ski Lodge or Hunt Lodge and even in a den or office. Everything from a pocket watch case to huge plaques - from needle and thread holders to cigar caddy - these decorative objects survive today a testament to the artisan's craft of carving wood.
This superb smallish oval jewelry casket has survived in such nice condition, and the beautifully hand carved bird crouches so lifelike, it's really quite amazing to think it's a carving throughout. The box is oval, 9" x 6" and almost 6" in height. Noted on the photos also for your review as you look at them. The stain is original and patina is just as it should be. We've simply cleaned it up for you and given it a light wax. Ready to own, display, or gift.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type, I can see that the legs at rear are different in form than those on front of the box, but it's not distracting. I didn't notice it at first, and it rests solid and flat. There are tiny chips to the ends of a couple of the leaves/fronds, but none any on the bird or the rest of the casket. The interior is really in fine shape. I did scotch tape clean that blue velvet, but looks like it gathered some more dust before my photographer got to it. Static electricity of winter, I suppose. We'll be sure it's as pristine as it truly is. A lovely old silk velvet interior - the original. No stains nor odors. Definitely a gift-suitable old treasure. It has a lock that appears to be working, but we do not have the original key at listing time. If we can locate an old one from our stash that will turn the lock, we'll annotate the listing. At listing time, no key.
Our photos are large and clear. We do expect our customers to review them all, evaluate the item based on both our description and our images. Thanks for all the compliments - we love what we do! Antiques & Uncommon Treasure - all the best, all the time!
