Spectacular find! This is a fine c.1770-1830 French Palais Royal sewing box, complete with most of the original sewing tools and implements still inside, a stunning fine old matched set. The old box is rather simple and in a superbly burled hardwood. Interior mirror remains undamaged and still surrounded by the original chenille trim. The lift-out tray has all but 3 of the original implements, missing just 2 of the star-shaped silk winders and the tool that would have had a tweezer on one end and an ear wax spoon on the other, and in which place you see a long ribbon threader or "bodkin" needle.
Very good to excellent for age and type. The pieces you see are in lovely condition for age and type. None of the pieces are broken though there is a fine hairline on the thimble which you can view in our photos. Scissors are perfectly fitted to their compartment and are original old cut steel ones that can bring well above $500 for a set now. Add in an 18k gold-capped scent bottle, and various more usual items as shown. The one little grooming tool has swing-out blades that include an ear wax spoon, and 3 variations of tooth picks. The trim metal on each of the pieces tests as 18k gold, and is yellow in color. The crochet tambour is unbroken, but is missing the tiny clamp that would anchor a metal crochet hook into the end, and it also has none of the various gauge hooks that would have been stored within the handle. Still, even with the small flaws, a remarkably fine old box you'll love to own. One more mention, it would have had either a sequin and gold thread embroidery on the pin pad, or perhaps a little ribbon embroidery, and that has not survived with the box. If you're handy and a purist, you might wish to create a replacement, and also a replacement silk pad for this glorious old box. Paper lined interior. silk velvet covered lift-out tray, old mirror and a working lock on this elegant old box. The box has a slight warp to the lid, but the lock does engage and the key works well.
