Listed French artist: Edouard Louis Marie WAGREZ 1815-1882 (signed "painted by Ed. Wager" on upper right of the canvas, in red, and dated 1881)
Painting in oil on linen canvas: Portrait of a Matron with Micromosaic Brooch, c.1881

This is a most appealing painting, the Grand Tour traveler boasting her beautiful mid-1800s Italian micro mosaic brooch at her collar, and a bonnet on her aging elegant head. A fine composition and great dignity in her pose and being, she comes to us in very good condition without any restorations or holes or rips, no losses. The painting is suitable to display as she is right now, though the frame is a later addition and is not as old as the painting. Lovely combined, however, and shows her off well. She hangs on my walls at listing time, and is a perfect portrait for any collector of fine old micro mosaics, too. The artist's works at auction have brought in the range of $1500 - $5800 from the research I was able to find. And the talent shown in this gentile portrait may well represent the pinnacle of the artist's talent. Accomplished just one year before his death, it is stunning!

Very good to excellent condition for age and type. The painting is in oil on stretched linen canvas, and is without any holes or tears, no restorations to note. The frame is, as noted, a later addition and it presents her beautifully. She hangs on my walls even now, a superb Impressionist painting with personality and grace. Love this one! The painting is 24.5" x 19.75" on stretcher and in the frame as you see it, is 27" x 22.75" and approximately 1.75" thick (frame).

Our photos are large and clear. We do expect our customers to review them all, evaluate the item based on both our description and our images. Thanks for all the compliments - we love what we do! Antiques & Uncommon Treasure - all the best, all the time!
