Just a fun old treasure, not in pristine condition (see some stitches missing, gone over the years, and a little fading on the stitches/wool) but wonderful just the same. Mounted on this tapestry panel is a lovely cast ormolu crucifix with silver Christ, and a half shell of fine polished mother of pearl shell. This would have been made the same time and by same makers as the little goat and horse carriages with "egg" of pearl shell bodies, and likely the little holy font was purchased also in the Palais Royal boutiques as a memento. Some child has done this needlework, I'm certain, and the holy font and crucifix is affixed thereupon. Silk-backed, it is further decorated in silk embroidery. A charming piece, dates mid-1800s.
Good condition for age and type, mention made of the light fading and also the missing stitches. View our photos to evaluate. The crucifix and its holy font of pearl shell are each in fine condition, no breaks or flaws noted there. The outer measurement is 10.5" x 8" (irregular) and the depth is 1.75". A usable holy font, or a devotional decorative item.
