A spectacular and large jewelry box in the finest French tradition of the Victorian or Napoleon III era (c. 1850-70s, roughly for this box). The oversized serpentine form is richly adorned in cast bronze trim and up top as cartouche you find a hand painted floral spray. This is original to this beautiful old box, which presents in very nice condition. The painting is perfectly protected under the original cover glass and all trim and the 6 cast bronze ornate feet all combine to elevate it in appeal and height. That it has its original working lock and key, too, tips the scale on this one. Fabulous! The box is 11.5" x 9" irregular serpentine form, and is 4" tall when closed.
Very good condition for age and type. I find just one surface/veneer flaw and that is a very small pice of veneer missing on upper back narrow panel, marked with an "x" on our photos so you'll not miss seeing how innocuous it truly is. Additionally, there is some warp to the lid of this box that makes it a bit difficult to lock it. You can see the rise in our photos. It will lock if you sort of press down on it as you work the key, but it's rather tight and should be considered as you decide. Otherwise, and in display, it is just lovely. The rest of it has only light or very modest evidence of its age, and with all that curved veneer, presents an amazing testament to the artistry of the ebeniste (cabinetry maker) who created it. It is of the finest quality and design, and I would have expected to see an engraved lock plate for one of the lauded top firms such as Tahan, Vervelle, Sormani or Giroux, which would have elevated the price a good deal. Here you have the luxurious casket, and a little better price. It might well be Tahan. But it is an unsigned one. The original interior lining is entirely intact though is not perfect. View our images. It is unstained, however, and in very good form for age. Silk in a slightly faded rendition of the original red.
