With a bit of a gothic feel to it owing to the hand painted enamel work that includes a silver banner and a gold lion passant (rearing profile of a lion) as well as the French Fleur-de-Lis here and there on all pieces. A Clichy-looking clear twist handle on the decanter with the original clear stopper, too. All in fine condition for age and type. And raised white enamel "bead" or jewel decorating the border of the silver banner - stunning fine appeal on this larger service. Originally it would have also had a tumbler (timbale) or perhaps 2, and perhaps a lid for the sugar bowl you see, thought not always. The absinthe service includes a large decanter for water, would have had a small one for absinthe (no longer with the set, sorry) and a sugar bowl for sugar cubes, a tray to hold them all. You can add your own crystal goblets. A spectacular set just as it is.
Very good to excellent without any chips and no cracks. The set would have, however, had a timbale (tumbler) to go along with it - some had 2. This set includes a larger-than-usual decanter. Use it at table for wine! Or with your crystal stemware around it and liqueur in the decanter for aperitif service. You'll find so many ways to enjoy this gorgeous old French set. Dates c. 1850-70.
