Maker: Puiforcat - one of the finest of all the French silversmith houses /businesses, has been making historic designs and beautiful silver for 200 years, and only recently became part of the HERMES company which purchased the firm. Still active in France, a single knife like this, purchased new, would be approximately $800. You can check it online if you like. The set of 12 you see here are late 1800s to early 1900s, bear the size and sterling silver blades that tell us they are fruit knives. The tiny silversmith's poincon (punch mark) tells us they are Puiforcat, as does the name produced on the blade's back side. The Minerve #1 is also present on each blade, guarantee of .950/1000 pure silver. These will not stain with fruit, and are brilliantly beautiful at table or in hand. The knives are each set with mother of pearl handles, each in fine order, no chips nor cracks. They have an heirloom monogram incised and set with silver, too, and that monogram only adds to the allure and appeal. Not always easy to read, I think this one is an intertwined D and L.
Excellent condition throughout, with no chips nor cracks or breaks to the mother of pearl handles, no loss of silver monograms and just stunning old Puiforcat design in the silver. None finer. A Louis XV combination of acanthus, vining garlands of flowers and the cross-ribbon in the motif. Knives are each 19.5 cm long (approximately 8") and the total weight is 507 grams. The box is not original but works great for storage.
