Delightful & rare antique Victorian era hand carved wood 23.75" wall hanging tobacco pipe rack, figural with two charming hooded monk figures holding a pipe & snuff box and with seashell shaped holder! Entirely hand carved, the piece is just under 24" wide and 11" tall! A whimsical figural display, the rack itself is in the form of a wide, shallow sea shell with the smallish holes in the curved bottom (meant to hold the pipes with thin necks or stems but the holes could easily be expanded for your fine antique or heirloom pipe collection if need be). Each side shows a hooded monk or friar style figure, we think, judging from the rosary around the waist of the left side figure. The one on the left holding a snuff box in his outstretched hand, the one on the right clutching a pipe. Both figures' legs extend up under the curve of the seashell, both wearing sandals :). Not Black Forest in origins, we think, but would go great in such an accented decor. A wonderful decorative piece, great for pipes, collectable spoons...whatever you decide.
Very good condition. A portion of the cross on the rosary around the left figure's waist appears to be chipped off. Possibly a small chip or two elsewhere but, as you can see, the piece is in overall wonderful shape. It has a dark cherry or mahogany colored finish, the back a bit more burgundy in color. See pictures for all measurements.
