A very interesting old French sampler, dating mid-late 1800s (c.1850-80) and very likely done by a child. The hand painted portions (Sainte-Françoise's face & hands) are also sewn over in tiny silk stitches on this one, as is the crucifix and Christ figure. You can see the tiny tiny thin silk threads if you look closely at our images. The wonderful art of this one is enhanced by use of the chenille yarns that comprise her gown and cape, habit, and then those arranged in a 3-D fine and floral framework for the stitchery. The string around the nun's neck that dangles a cross of beadwork is also an artistic 3-D touch that is just charming. The needle arts were relegated to the girls/women, and girls were not educated in other than the home arts, (needlework, music, sewing clothing) for the most part. So these early panels of a child's needlework show you something of the lives of 19th century (and earlier) women. Worked on open canvas, the silk stitches are in fine condition as well as is the canvas. House in the original frame which shows some age and loss, typical of the age and type of frame. Simple and elegant. 19" x 15" and 1" deep (frame's outer measurement)
Very good to excellent for age and type. The frame shows age, as notes and visible, and a few losses here or there, but not a great deal. The needlework panel is excellent. No holes, no tears, no stains, no damage to note at all, and a lovely old panel it is. This one was coming apart (frame's backing) when I bought it and the glass was so dirty, too, I've taken it apart, cleaned the glass and dusted the open canvas, resealed the back against dust. The paper backing is new since I bought the item but will keep it clean and fresh and beautiful for ages to come. And nothing of any value or importance was on the wasted paper backing I removed.
