A rare treasure, this copious carved cabinet in walnut is the work product of perhaps France's finest furniture maker of the 19th century, Gueret Freres (Gueret Brothers). Their signature is only shown on the finest of carved goods. A full-sized armoire or buffet, hutch from this firm will command prices above $50,000. Their smaller works tend to be even finer in the carvings, and such is the case with this fine key cabinet and holy font. I bought this one to keep, and it reminds me so much of the finest carver's work, that of Dutch Master, Grinling Gibbons, whose angels grace the interior choir stall at St. Paul's Cathedral in London, and palace walls throughout UK and Europe. His carvings were done in late 1600s to early 1700s, of course, and the Gueret Brothers are mid-1800s. But the quality and fine detail in the lifelike carvings is much the same. Certainly one of the finest sources of 19th century carving. The cabinet has red stained glass panels backing the carving on the doors and a red silk velvet lined interior that has key mounts. The key mounts can be removed and shelves installed to be used as the most gorgeous Master bath medicine chest ever, should you wish to do small modification. Cabinet is 18" high, 15" wide and 8" deep front to back. The old hanging hardware is there on back, along with the maker's mark for Gueret Freres, PARIS (see our images).
Very good to excellent for age and type. There are a couple of small flaws: you'll see edge chip noted on the left top ridge of trim on this cabinet. There are tiny losses on the door carvings, that are thin and delicately crafted and open work making the red stained glass visible through them. The carvings are, we think, Joseph and Mary, and the presence of the elegant child's fact that forms the holy font might represent Christ as a child. The font is zinc or tin and is in place therein.
