Antique French Jewelry Box, or Fit it Out for Display of Collection of Miniatures, Cutlery
You'll find any number of perfect uses for this stunning old 19th century French box from the cabinet makers (ebenistes) of France. It's of finest exotic hardwood, beautiful grain to it - stunningly so. And it is fully lined in a very fine condition moire silk fabric that is thickly padded in the lid portion, so when closed it will hold and protect jewelry or perhaps a set of beautiful old French dessert knives - whatever you put inside. I like it open to display small collections - you'll know just how you want to use it. It's a very finely crafted box, indeed. Unsigned, but could certainly be one from lauded makers like Tahan, Vervelle, Giroux or others at the top of their craft of cabinet and box making, 19th century. The lock would appear to be working, but at listing time we have no working key to fit it. Priced accordingly. Lovely rounded corners and superb bright brass pencil edging that caps the lid's outer rim. Elegant! Box is 10.75" x 7.5" and is 1.75" deep when closed.
Very good to excellent condition with only a tiny lift to one side due to slight warp of the old hardwood. Beautiful grain to this burled wood, I can see a couple of little imperfections showing on the top, visible in our images but not very noticeable to the eye - so beautiful is the rest of this one. The lining is fabulous - original and of finest quality moire silk. Brass pencil edging is the mark of a fine quality box, and is in fine condition, no dents or loosening, no losses. A fine box, indeed!
