Superb Antique French Jewelry Perfume Sewing Box, Kingwood, by Alph. GIROUX
Among the finest cabinetry makers, Alphonse GIROUX is a name we look for on lock plates of fine 19th century boxes (and other goods). Right up there with TAHAN and Vervelle, G. Keller, the quality never lets us down with these maker's masterpieces. This is a nice large jewelry box, 2 original Baccarat Perfume bottles and their stoppers still in place, and one of the most gorgeous outer boxes ever. The old kingwood box (solid) has all of the details of quality, hardware and canted corners trimmed out in brilliant brass pencil edging. Working lock has its key in place, too. The chevron pattern to the straight-grained Kingwood is further accented in diamond-parquet on the lid. Box is 10.75" long, 7.75" front to back, and 4.25" high when closed. Large and lovely!
Very good to excellent condition. No lifts, no chips, no cracks or flaws to note on this elegant box. Its only flaw is that it would have originally had a lift-out tray with sewing tools there inside over that smaller open compartment. And of course the old original silk interior has seen better days. I've looked it over, and I think replacing the bottom liner with fresh cream colored silk will bring it up substantially, and we'll see if we can find a matching silk to do it. But at listing, the box is as you see it. The criss-cross stringing in inside lid is to hold pattern pieces, love notes, you name it. The mid-1800s unsigned Baccarat cologne bottles and their stoppers are crystal, enameled in gold and are without chips or cracks. Very fine. It is a superb box.
