Isn't he just the cutest ever! An exquisite Animalier sculpture entirely hand carved in wood, a Black Forest desk stand with original ink well and pen holder. He's got magnificent anatomical detail, glass eyes and is probably the finest dog carving we've ever offered. Glass eyes with pupil bring him alive, don't they. The Black Forest carvings are usually thought of as Swiss and German, but in fact we find very fine Animalier era carvings out of France, as well. This one, carved from a single slab of wood (see bottom) is one of the best. Measurements noted on photos: C. 1850-1890, probably an early Grand Tour object. Such carving skill should be signed, but I see no signature on this one. Base is 6" x 4" oblong, and it's 6" in height to top of the sitting pooch.
Very good to excellent condition throughout, with a nod to that small nip to the end of one ear. I see no other chips, no breaks or restorations. For a 19th century carving, the condition is exceptional. Pen is a prop and not included, but that inkwell insert is the old original and is a bit more complex than usual and is unbroken. Hinged lid lies flat when closed.
