LG Antique Black Forest Carved 20" Jewelry Cabinet, Chest: 12 Drawer & Hunting Dog Figural Top
Magnificent & rare antique Victorian era Black Forest hand carved 20 1/4" tall jewelry cabinet, a beautiful large counter-top box with cabinet style doors securing an array of eleven small jewelry drawers, all with carved drawer fronts and original royal blue silk or satin lining AND the piece is crowned with a superb animalier or hunt style dog or hound figure & foliage! A truly remarkable piece, rare large size and extensive carving. Of the Black Forest figures, the Brienz bear is probably the most common, then you have the more rare figures like the hare, fox, pastoral bull, cow & lamb and then there's the dog. Not in order of rarity but the dog is definitely one of the more popular, a wonderful hunt style addition and the detail to the hound and enveloping branches, foliage & undergrowth are fantastic. Foliate carvings accent the two front cabinet doors and sides, also along the facade of the bottom drawer, below the cabinet portion. A marvelous decorative piece, don't miss it!
Very good condition. The doors do close securely and it has a working lock with key but there is a slight separation between the doors. The dog is missing a portion of its tail and there is a repaired break near the mid-leg area where the figure has been re-glued to the top of the box (visible a the rear extended leg and bend of front leg). A few small corner or edge chips here and there, there is an age or drying split in the top of the back wood panel (back of cabinet/box) and the feet appear to be either replacements or an addition and not original. Finally, the bottom drawer is missing any lining. I'll see if I can find a matching blue to line it with next time I'm near a fabric store. See pictures for all measurements.
