In a most unusual carved bone cross that appears to be a simple crucifix on first look, you find that the box-like cross has 2 sliding panels on back side that reveal 17 relics resting in gold foil cording, each with hand written paper identifier tags. This crucifix hangs from its original gilded frame on a wire mount that allows the hook of the cross top to slip behind and hook, a very safe mount. And once removed and opened, its secret is wonderful. As you see in our photos and scan, there are a few missing in one arm of the cross. And you can see all the names in our images, as well. Surely an important piece and one for the serious collector, or Catholic church historians.
Very good to excellent as you see it, missing only the inserted relics on one arm of the cross (see our images). Measurements are also on our photos, but the small Christ figure is 3.5" and nearly 2" fingertip to fingertip. The cross is 8" tall x 3.75" and 1.2" thick (box cross) with the body of Christ protruding another .5" or so from the cross. By the striations, we can tell it is carved of bone. Overall the frame is 13" x 7.5" and is 1" thick. The crucifix rises an inch or more from the surface. The old frame appears to be original and is in good condition. Backing is black silk velvet and is in very good condition, too. RARE fine item!
