One of the larges old table snuff boxes we've seen, this one is a handful and would have only been used as a table-top box and not as a pocket snuff. One small gem set center of the top of lid. We have not tested, but it is deep blood red, either a ruby or garnet. Obviously original to the old box, one wonders at significance. Simple, elegant, large. Circa 1800-1850.
Very good to excellent condition. The condition is excellent throughout, no damage to note and just gorgeous old burled wood, turned perfectly, lined as you'd anticipate it would be and without any chips there, either. Rare to find, if you love old wood, burls and knots, this is the one for you. A small 2-3mm cabochon of either garnet or ruby (we have not tested it) is mounted in the center of the upper lid. So smooth, you'll love handling this one.
