On rare occasion we find a few fine old reliquary, but rarely do we find them in such fine condition as the ones I'm listing today. There are 4 in all, each offered separately, so look through to find them.
This one is magnificent and contains relics of the Four Apostles! Good size at 4" diameter and 1" deep, it includes fine old paperolle decorative interior and 5 relics, each with hand written identification label, and stating that the relic is from Mathew, Mark, Luke and John - Jesus' 4 Apostles. The card and paper relic retains not only the original undamaged cover glass, but also the original wax seal (view in detail in our photos) and is in exceptionally fine condition throughout. Dating early to mid-1800s, these would have been made by nuns in various convents, and the seal will determine from which this one originated. I am not an expert in all of the seals, unfortunately, and do not have ID for this one's origin, sorry. If you are an expert and know from the seal, please email us and share the info and I'll add it for our customers. Thanks
Very good to excellent condition throughout, without any chip or cracks or hairlines to the cover glass, no loose or floating parts from the interior mounted paperolle or relics, and really not even much (if any) damage or wear to the paper exterior of the case. And the royal purple silk backside presents beautifully and complete with the original seal, which still holds the threads that verify authenticity of contents (such as they are). I don't think anyone really believes these bits of bone are from the Saints, and science can now prove to us that they are usually ox or chicken bone, but the power of belief is such that, to true believers, the transformation occurs. A superb example of this most interesting genre, out of France, early to mid-1800s.
