A stately portrait of a 19th century gentleman, his hair combed forward in the fashion popular in Napoleon's era, but we think the painting dates slightly later, c.1830-60. He might well have been a soldier in Napoleon's time, and this is his more mature self, clinging to the look he favored in his youth. We love the look of the old portraits. I've got my entire dining room filled with them. They make any interior interesting.
Very good to excellent condition, age and type considered. It has no holes or tears, no restorations to note on this fine oil painting portrait done in oil on stretched linen canvas. The frame is in also in very good condition for age, too, and is a beautiful one worthy of the price for this superb painting. You'll note one spot where the gesso is separated, right top in our images. This is not difficult to fill. If I get time I'll work a little restoration on that section, but we want you to know it's there. The outer frame measures 26" x 22.5" and is a fabulous 3" in depth. The painting is original to the frame and is 18.25" x 15".
