One of the most beautiful old early 1800s French sugar caskets ever, lockable but we don't have a working key at listing time. Yes, it's true that at one time sugar was so valuable it was locked away so servants would not pilfer it from the Master's larder. The very earliest sugar caskets were a bit smaller than this early 1800s one, which is large and ever so elegant, opulent in all ways. The fine old French glass in electric blue is a personal favorite, though I do love the opaline glass, too. This casket has elaborate floral enamel work and also delicate garlands decorating it, all in very fine condition. As you can see, it's just beautiful when empty and with light playing through. This is truly a gem! As noted, it is the large size, largest the old sugar caskets were made in, and dates around c. 1830 I would say, give or take 10 years.
Very good to excellent condition throughout without any chips or cracks in that beautiful electric blue glass, and very little if any loss or rub to the wonderful enamel florals. Both handles remain intact and the lock is there, appears to work, but we don't have a key to fit it at listing time. We will try our spares and perhaps find one that will work the lock. If so, we will add that information but at listing time and our pricing reflect no key. The only flaw I can find to disclose for your evaluation is that there is a slight indentation around the base of the box, giving me the understanding that this one would have originally had a brass mounted bottom, likely with ball feet to raise the casket a bit. It's not noticeable unless you're looking for it (even IF you're looking for it, really), but it is an indication that it once had a fitted brass base onto which it would have been lifted up a little. That said, it is fabulous just as it is. On display in my home at the moment, where it's being admired in full.
