Stunning & rare antique French 18k gold on sterling silver “vermeil” flatware ensemble, a highly rare pattern with caduceus serpents & cornucopia, medallions sans monograms, gilded & stainless steel knife blades and all in fabulous condition! Somewhat of a collection that we’ve put together since they’re in the same pattern. We’ve had the pattern in the past, not in vermeil but a more comprehensive flatware set in sterling and so when we come across these rare patterns, we tend to just buy them in the anticipation of adding to a future set or, in this case, offering to a prospective buyer who has a set in the same pattern and is looking to add some scrumptious vermeil pieces to their ensemble. The set consists of six dessert or fruit forks, four fruit or dessert knives with vermeil blades, two luncheon or entremet sized and two full dinner sized knives with stainless blades and two huge dinner sized forks. The handles, etc., all bear the post-1878 French Minerve or Minerva hallmarks, the tiny number “1” within those marks means they’re in .950 silver under the thick gold plating (95% pure silver, higher than the .925 standard for “sterling” silver). Silversmith marks are for Henin & Cie. (Company), Paris circa 1896. The blades of the vermeil knives are also marked “Racine, Marseille”. A glorious set! I’ll see if I can go back through our records to find the pattern name, a rare one though.
Very good to excellent condition. A bit of tarnish visible near tops of handles where they meet the blades on a few. I’m pretty certain that the stainless steel blades are a newer restoration/improvement as they surely would’ve had the pre-stainless blades originally from their age. A tiny bend to a dessert fork tine or two. See pictures for measurements.
