Rare antique French Napoleon III era match holder or box, an opulent casket in jet black ebony or ebonized veneers with brass & champleve enamel appliqués including an Egyptian Campaign motif sphinx and butterfly, finished interior and unique match striker panel front! Box collectors as we are, we always watch for these fine French match boxes, strikers, and do find them now and then, rarely in as fine a condition as the one you see here. The cases like this are from the Napoleon III era, c. 1845-70s, roughly, and remains a fabulous example of how perfectly each functional item truly was crafted in the era of the ebeniste's penchant for boxes of all sorts. Wonderful for your mantel and romantic formal fireplace lighting (dramatic!), by the way, or just to group in and amongst your collection of fine French boxes.
Very good to excellent condition. The box is beautifully crafted, as you can see. There is a small section of the right rear rounded side edge piece on the lid that appears to be later replacement/restoration. There are also two small holes at the rear corners of the lid where there were likely two more of the round champleve enamel appliqués that have gone missing over the years. The interior is in finished rosewood and has two small holes in the lid from the mounting of the sphinx appliqués and one in the left side from a rear corner appliqué. A very nice box! See pictures for measurements.
