Wonderful antique Victorian or Napoleon III era 9.75” tantalus style cigar or cheroot presenter chest, an ornate box with brass & white metal accenting, canted lid and five slide-out trays to hold up to fifty cigars! I really love this style of box, both the lid and entire front panel open up to expose the fitted interior. This one has five thick, solid wood trays that slide on bottom rails. Each tray with carved grooves to hold ten cigars with up to 4.5” lengths. We’ve had them in this style over the years in various exterior forms, elegant old French ebony & burled woods with brass and other inlays, English oak with Gothic style accents and this one is quite unique. A combination of both reticulated brass around the canted lid edges, bronze patinated corner appliqués on the lid and centered is a white metal cartouche with interlaced “DE” or “ED” monogram. Also unique are the protruding wood accents at the corners, all of the above combining to form this visually impressive box! Working lock & key, too! A treasure chest, even if cigars aren’t your thing :).
Very good condition. There is a repaired chip to the base moulding on the lower left corner and the right side bottom moulding appears to be a restoration with a lighter segment on the back. Two small brass tacks missing from the top & bottom of the white metal cartouche but I’ll have those replaced before sending out (we somehow missed that before photographing). See pictures for all measurements.
