A charming portrait of childhood, this is a little French girl, oil on stretched canvas, dating early to mid-1800s (1830-60). The off-shoulder gown she wears and the age and type of old wooden stretcher for the linen canvas help us date this one. Search as I have, I do not find the artist's signature. A splash or two of warm red/orange to her left tempts me to search for initials, but I think it's just the pattern of a chair behind her. She has a feel of an early Impressionist leaning, actually, so perhaps she is c. 1860s, latest. Big soulful brown eyes, ambiguity in her visage, I'd estimate her as 5-7 years of age. The painting is elegantly executed, but it has hung in a smokey room, perhaps - a doting father's den? The surface of the painting has a darkened residue we have not in the least tried to clean away. I like her just as she is, but our buyer might wish to have this one cleaned. The painting, on it's stretcher frame is 26" x 19", tightly mounted, still. Ready to display with or without a frame. She no longer is in her original frame if there was one. Noting that I don't see much evidence or scraping around border oil paint that would be indicative of a frame, this might not have ever been framed. Such a loving portrait, one wonders if it might not be of the artist's child.

Very good condition for age and type. You can see the one issue with this one is a bit of darkening to her skin, I am unsure if it might be the smoke of an artist/father's den, or similar. I love it just as it is. From the backside image you can see there are no tears nor rips, holes in the old linen canvas upon which she's been so lovingly painted, slight loss at a place or two outer border, perhaps indicates she was once in a frame. Will display well with or without. The painting is 26" x 19.5", well-stretched on original stretcher boards.
