What a magnificent large oil painting, portrait of a handsome distinguished gentleman in spectacles, bust pose, with his cravat, jewelry, and a silver filagree snuff box in his hand. I've been hoarding this one at home for a long time, enjoying him. The interior setting includes stacks of leather-bound books, and is obviously a study, making it all the more appealing. Both in composition and in the superb quality of the artist's skill at portraiture, it is a top-rated painting, museum quality. I feel certain it is one that would have been framed in the fabulous French Empire appliqué gold frames, but it comes to us without its original frame. I have him hanging above a half-height French vitrine and he truly needs no frame. Bold confident and intelligent gaze, eyes, a handsome and very engaging subject, you'll love this painting like I do, I'm certain. Oddly enough, for a portrait of such fine quality, this one is unsigned. I keep thinking I'll see a signature somewhere, obscured in part by the varnish aging, but I can't see one. And I also cannot identify the red/blue lapel ornament as being a medal of some sort, but perhaps you might. I'm sure it is not very long post-Napoleonic era. If you can recognize that color bar as a military insignia of some sort, help us to add to our description, please email. Thank you.
Very good to excellent for age and type. Oil painting on stretched linen canvas, there is an old but well-accomplished restoration at outer frame, both on left of his shoulder as the photos face you (marked with white "x" to highlight it so you can see) and a very small one to the right edge of painting at about the 4 o'clock position, also marked with a small white "x". Outer edge of the painting shows that it was housed in a frame, but otherwise this one is just magnificent in all ways. One I will forever regret selling. All the more wonderful because he holds a snuff box. Face and hand SO realistic, even his veins show. The painting's outer measurement is 29.75" x 25" - nice large and very impressive. Still nicely stretched on its stretcher boards, too.
