A splendid and oversized gaming chest or box, the kind we just LOVE, from the Napoleon III era (c. 1850-70s, roughly) when they were the height of fashion for any well-appointed home or chateau. The ebenistes (ebanistes) of Paris vied for the honors of being the most superb makers, and among the top ones were names like TAHAN, Vervelle, P. Sormani, A. Giroux, and a handful of others whose signature on the lock plate will raise the price substantially. The quality you see here is equal to those, but we have no signature (not all were signed, even though the maker might well have been one of the top names in 19th century box and cabinetry making). Larger and deeper than the majority of these, it's got space to hold the old original gambling chips that remain with it and also a couple decks of playing cards (sets included are new and just a courtesy set, not antique). The lift-out trays are for 4 players, and there is also the cards tray which is used as ante/betting tray.

Very good condition for age and type. Superb work in the parquets, brass and mother of pearl inlays in the boulle manner, and canted corners with complete and undamaged pencil edging. No monogram on that center top cartouche. You could still engrave your own or that of recipient if you choose this as a gift. A slight disruption of the old wood at left front corner of top, near the edging and one dark line far to the right on that front kingwood panel also bears a mention. You can view more carefully in our images whatever other very small flaws might be present such as bottom edging, veneers. I have not counted the gambling chips and they are just what came with this one. None are broken or chipped, no cracks, however. Many are mother of pearl, and the others are likely ivorine, an early French plastic that mimics the real stuff. We have not had them burn-tested, which is the only way to be certain. One section of that top cartouche boullework has a missing bit of the ebonized wood (see images) A couple decks of new playing cards have been included, with art by French Impressionist, Manet. See photos for full measurements. The box is 13.5" wide, oversized throughout and the slight imperfections allow it at a great price for you.

Our photos are large and clear. We do expect our customers to review them all, evaluate the item based on both our description and our images. Thanks for all the compliments - we love what we do! Antiques & Uncommon Treasure - all the best, all the time!
