First of all, these are rare to find. And 2nd, this one has a warped top which doesn't hinder use but does show as a flaw. Ok, that out of the way, this is a late 1700s to early 1800s French hand carved and gilded wooden lectern, bible stand of large size. A wonderful item to use now for your open cookbook, favorite art or collection book on display, by the way. This one lifts open to reveal a storage compartment in the base. One could certainly argue, with the mechanical riser mechanism, it was originally a music stand, instead. Room for storing scores of music inside and made in a manner (highly decorative) that would suggest it. You'll find the perfect way to use it in your home. We've tried to show the mechanism, help you visualize how it lifts. The long arm that is ratcheted in stops, heights, is broken off and would have been much longer for a higher upright capability. It would be a simple piece to cut over and install, but we'll leave the old original with it as it is.
Very good condition for age and type, considering it's 200 or more years old and wood. The warp to the top is the worst flaw, but it also has that little ratchet-bar that is only a partial of the original (which I'm estimating would have been about 7-8" in length). One more flaw notable: The one beautifully carved old leg has a clean break that has been restored ages ago, but not a tiny wipe of gold fill that would make the line disappear. If our buyer wishes us to do that one tiny further finish to the restoration, just ask. I have the perfect material, but we don't wish to alter it without buyer's say so. It is not distracting as it is. You'll find it noted in our photos, right facing front leg, about 1" up from bottom. The overall measurement of this fabulous stand is 16.75" x 14.75" and it is 7" at highest when closed.
Our photos are large and clear. We do expect our customers to review them all, evaluate the item based on both our description and our images. Thanks for all the compliments - we love what we do! Antiques & Uncommon Treasure - all the best, all the time.
