I love the old hand carved hunt-themed Black Forest plaques, carvings. We look for the best, and these large old ones are harder and harder to find. So it's a thrill to offer you this one, at a full 30" in length, with an overly large carved mountain goat as primary subject. This is the largest figure we've had on one of these, and it's so richly detailed in the carving, it seems real. As do also the pair of grouse or game hens that hang with it. The carver has designed this one to really thrill the hunter, and you'll note a hunter's game pouch, powder horn and a rifle mixed into the carving's background, along with plenty of oak leaves and branches. If this one ever was mounted on a wooden backing plaque, it must have been a massive one, indeed.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. We never get these that are completely free of a chip or two. The carving is free-standing as you see it, and again, very large and impressive. Beautifully crafted, it comes to us with the few notable flaws of a broken horn and chipped ears (see our photos), neither of which detract really, from this masterful sculpture in solid wood, hand carved, and dating mid to late 1800s. Heavy solid old forest growth wood, carved a bit hollowed from backside to cut down on the weight of it. There are a couple of notes on back, pertaining to earlier owner, which mean nothing about the carver and we'll leave them on it, but not bother to show it in detail here. 30" high, 17" widest and 4.5" deepest. Awesome piece!
