A wonderful painting in the manner of Jean-Baptiste CHARDIN, France artist. Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin (French, 2 November 1699 – 6 December 1779) was an 18th-century French painter. He is considered a master of still life, and is also noted for his genre paintings which depict kitchen maids, children, and domestic activities. Carefully balanced composition, soft diffusion of light, and granular impasto characterize his work.
The genre is Cuisine, or kitchen art, and the era is mid-1800s. The fabulous French painting with Flemish leanings shows a prep station still life, the old copper pot ready to be filled with the bounty of seafoods shown on the table. An earthenware jug completes the vignette. The painting is in oil on stretched linen canvas, and it's marvelous! Ready to frame, it is large at 25.75" x 21.25" and it's in fine form. It does not have the artist's signature, which too often is the case, so we can't tell you who painted this lovely old Fruits of the Hunt themed oil painting. We can only admire it with you and offer it up.
Very good condition, no holes and while there's a reinforcing strip of canvas adhered to the backside, I can't see any corresponding repair or restoration on the painting. I don't think it represents a tear at all, but perhaps the old canvas was wearing thin just there and someone ages ago has reinforced it. There is one tinier patch, and I can't see where it is from front side, either. It really does show nicely. Looks from the glare of photographer's lights, it might need to have the stretcher tightened in upper left corner, but apart from that angled lighting showing it up, it's really not much looseness to the normal view. Wonderful offering! Hard to find these and they're a must have for any Country French kitchen or dining room, aren't they. Ready to frame or to display as it is.
