Antique French Kingwood Gloves, Desktop or Jewelry, Documents Box, Casket, Parquet Work
Napoleon III era (c.1850-70) ebeniste's glove box or documents box, (can double as a work box, table box or jewelry chest) in elegant marquetry of Kingwood. The ebeniste/ebaniste (cabinetry workers) of 19th century France created some of the most outstanding and opulent boxes of any century before or since. These are why I have been a box collector my entire antiques-dealing career. The first antique item I bought for myself was a box, in England, as a graduate student. I still have it. It was simple, nothing grand like this one. But they always hold a promise of some treasure or other within. They beg to be opened, don't they. And things tucked in that are a thrill to discover only increases one's pleasure in owning them. Table boxes such as this one are perfect for desktop or coffee table, buffet or side table. Whether for your needlework, your jewelry, your ribbon-bound stack of love or heritage letters - this one will fill the bill in any form. It's one that shows beautifully with it's cast more bronze edging and cabriole legs and that fabulous chevron pattern to the veneers. A working lock and the original working key for it at listing time. You an lock your letters (or gloves) away if you wanted to.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. Cast more bronze cabriole legs and generous opulent edging all in place and nicely preserved without dents or loss. Likewise, the parquet work in veneer of Kingwood is all intact, nicely preserved. The box would be c.1850-70s. The interior is lined still in the old original cream silk fabric, and shows age, stains as visible in our photos. I've often re-lined the interiors of boxes, using the old piping. Now that you can just order silk moire fabrics in any color online, it's a much simpler task to re-line one. Others opt to re-line the interior with oil-painted papers which are Italian and can be ordered online, as well. I always prefer staying as close to the original as possible. The box is nice sized at 11" x 4.5" and is 3.5" tall when closed. A hinged drop front so one could easily choose the right pair of gloves, it is a gloves box. Perfect now for a marriage certificate or deed, perhaps.
Our photos are large and clear. We do expect our customers to review them all, evaluate the item based on both our description and our images. Thanks for all the compliments - we love what we do! Antiques & Uncommon Treasure - all the best, all the time!
