Antique French Jardiniere or Sewing Basket, Box 10", Bamboo and Embroidered in Silk
What a wonderful Napoleon III era (Victorian) accent. It's silk-lined, and was probably created to be used as a sewing basket originally. But if you lined it with something that's a moisture barrier (or used silk flowers), it would be a fabulous holder for a plant pot, as a centerpiece. The frame is bamboo and the fabric body is beautifully embroidered in silk. Trimmed out in silk cording (which needs a little handiwork to reattach on one length of the top as you can see in our photos). C. 1850-70, it presents in lovely condition without deterioration of the silk embroidery or fabrics, really. The old bamboo framework shows some loss of finish, as you can see in our photos. Would benefit from a satin varnish, I think, but we'll leave that to its next owner.
Very good condition for age and type. Silk embroidery in autumn colors, lovely old handwork remains in fine condition for age. The frame could use a little stain or matte varnish to improve it, but is lovely in this state, as well. Napoleon III era, at the height of the French Chinoiserie aesthetic that spread throughout Victorian era, as well. The height and diameter are each right at 10", so nice and large. Suitable for sewing or knitting basket, as well, or a centerpiece/jardiniere but please protect from moisture.
Our photos are large and clear. We do expect our customers to review them all, evaluate the item based on both our description and our images. Thanks for all the compliments - we love what we do! Antiques & Uncommon Treasure - all the best, all the time!
