A spectacular hand carved 19th century bear, Black Forest at its best! This one is a dancing bear that will thrill the children at home and the child in us all. My favorite use for these rare ones with moving arms/legs is to wire a little stringer of holly and bells on each arm and foot and hang him at the kitchen cabinets so a quick pull rings the bells and calls everyone to Christmas dinner. Fabulous Christmas decoration! But you'll want to use him all year long so don't drill to put in the bells, please, when they can easily be wire-wrapped with some holly or even mistletoe if you want to hang him above a doorway.
Very good to excellent condition throughout. He hasn't any chips or breaks, no cracks nor hairlines. A wonderful example of the charm and whimsey as well as elegant anatomical studies these old bears truly are. We'd date this mechanical one between 1870-1915, not later. Measurements are noted on the photos.
