What a spectacular old inkwell this one is. Old Paris porcelain pot with ormolu fittings set on a pen tray that is papier mache and hand painted in the Chinoiserie or Japonaise decorative style that was so popular in the Victorian (Napoleon III) era. Found in Paris recently, I'm so pleased to offer it here to our customers. I've never seen another quite like it, have you? But the style is familiar to me and is that made very popular in the reign of France's last Emperor, Louis-Napoleon (Napoleon III) and by the influence of his wife, the Empress Eugenie. You'll find this type of items among her collection in the Chinoise room at Fontainbleau. I'm sure it dates c.1850-70.
Very good condition throughout, with some surface abrasion typical of the papier mache materials it's made from, but no chips or cracks, no damage to report. The pen shown with it is a prop and is not included, of course. Hinged ornate porcelain lid with delicate flowers is without damage, is entirely hand painted. A real treasure!
Our photos are large and clear. We do expect our customers to review them all, evaluate the item based on both our description and our images. Thanks for all the compliments - we love what we do! Antiques & Uncommon Treasure - all the best, all the time!
