HUGE c.1850 Antique French Kingwood Marquetry Chest, Box, 24" x 17" Cashmere or Trousseau
Gorgeous antique French Louis Philippe to Napoleon III era 24" cashmeres chest, a magnificent large table box with kingwood marquetry style veneers, serpentine shape, polished brass or bronze edging and beautiful finished interior with burled or birdseye maple! Surviving really quite well, it is as beautiful inside as out. This is one of the largest we've ever located, at 24" x 16 1/4" and 12 1/4" tall, it's a magnificent example of the kind of chests made for multiple use - marriage or trousseau chest referred to as "boite a' challes" because the elegant imported cashmere table covers were often stored in them. A gentleman would have used one as a desk, perhaps, with drawers inside and plenty of room. We have a rare selection of these extra large French boxes. This is one of the largest. Elegant marquetry style with book-matched kingwood veneers on all sides, kingwood borders and both the huge lid and front panel open to the burled interior. A glorious old treasure, museum quality.
Very good condition for age and type, this one is not perfect though close :). The brass edging along the front bottom has been resecured with brass pins or nails. There is a small age/drying split in the veneer in a spot or two and possibly a tiny chip or two here and there but, as you can see, the entire piece is truly in extraordinary condition. It even has a working lock with old bronze or brass ringed skeleton key. A really stunning old one, and price considers its flaws.
