A wonderful desktop accent for your collection, this is an early forerunner of plastic - the Gutta Percha or Thermoplastic out of which early photography cases were made in the 1850s, and here used as a framework for desk thermometer. The myriad of ways the earliest easily-molded substance was used are seemingly endless, and desk sets, inkwells, standish, hand mirrors, frames for photos - quite a lot of useful and decorative items that had formerly been carved in wood were now easily produced from this marvelous 'new' discovery, Gutta Percha.
Very good condition, as you see it here. Stand remains, as does the fully intact thermometer.
