This is probably the prettiest old Victorian papier mache jewelry chest/box we've had in ages, and a fine one at that. Inlaid with tons of mother of pearl and the more colorful abalone shell, and hand painted over with gorgeous floral motif. Inside is a treat. The interior lift-out tray is opulently lined and trimmed in crimson velvets and silk, and has jewelry compartments, rings storage place and a fitted spot for your pocket watch, too. Beautiful! No damage at the hinges (rare in old chests of papier mache, you know) and an overall great appearance make this one a spectacular find. Only one little line on inside of lid near hinge area (see our images) but it isn't a crack, and is not shown through to the other side. Hinges tight and original, strong. No maker marks to tell us it is Jennens & Bettridge, but it well could be based on the quality and size. Dates to mid-1800s, and is from England, we're quite certain, so was at the least influenced by those fine makers at J&B. No restorations at all on this piece. Lock intact but without key (lost to the Dallas shop, apparently). It's from our Dallas inventory, now that we've closed that shop, and is priced at about half our Dallas tag price, with so much less overhead on the internet sites. Get it while it's here.
