You've followed us for a while, you know how much I love hand carved wood antiques, and particularly the old animalier & "Fruits of the Hunt" themed carvings from the Swiss carvers (I'm nearly half Swiss and pretty new - Dad was 1st generation, but I digress). The Black Forest art, often more realistic than the animals themselves, almost, just thrill me! I've got fabulous carvings in both homes and, given more walls, I'd have even more. I never tire of seeing them. This pair of super anatomical studies, entirely hand carved, are being offered together as a pair, just as I bought them recently in France. They're a very unique size, the oval solid oak plaques just a hair under 13" high, will be perfect to flank a big beautiful old carved clock, perhaps, or mirror above a fireplace? These are the perfect accent in anything from a cabin to lodge, to Country French or English manor decor. I've even seen them work beautifully in a slightly eclectic modern interior. It's the art, the sculpture of them and the perfection of the animal they represent, isn't it. The "fruits of the hunt" isn't about just hunters, you know - it's a genre that descends from the old Flemish paintings which are more a prayer of thanksgiving for the day's bountiful delivery of food to the family. The solid oak panels are identical in size but the figures on each differ. One with a large chamois or mountain goat, ornate foliage & flowers behind it and with a hunting satchel below and feather plumed hat above. The other with two fowl or bird figures, woven-looking satchel and leaves. The figures all depicted in a hanging position, as if fresh from the hunt and with marvelous detail, note the rope around the chamois legs and belt strap at the top of the water fowl grouping. Exceptional! There is also a die stamp marking on the lower right corner of the bird plaque that reads “A.H.J. Wald, Berne & Thoune”, likely the Swiss retailer. Look these over in our photos, see if you've got the perfect spot for this set before I find it in my houses. I love that rabbit in particular!

Very good to excellent condition throughout, with just the small flaws to note. The outer horn and ear on the chamois are missing and there is a chip to the upper wing tip on the larger bird. A few small nicks to the outer edges of the plaques but no warping, no breaks or repairs to note. We’ve shown them from all angles. They're quite unique in that the animals here are carved in nearly full relief, and just beautifully crafted. Full measurements are noted directly on the photos.
