Recently acquired an entire collection of fine early to mid-1800s cigar cases and we’ll list each one separately for sale. Look for them all, though. The entire collection is just fabulous! From hand embroidered ones to one favorite of mine with hand carved antler stag on front, to a splendid old shagreen case, to a host of others that would be wonderful gift ideas along with a tin of Davidoff cigars (or other) for your favorite friends who enjoy one now and then. I’ll be brief in describing each one, but they’ve come to us out of Paris and from the estate of a noted (and titled) collector who chose to remain anonymous. Wish we could disclose.
Originally sold at 24, Place Choiseul, Paris, this magnificent cigar case would have been a great luxury in the mid-1800s when it was crafted and sold. It remains today a very rare old one. The special leather, shagreen or galuchat, is the finest belly scales of the stingray, a rare leather indeed. The case has the original moire silk lining with gold embossed marchand (merchant) stamp. The word “Galuchat” is French for shagreen, and the use in the embossment means to me this boutique might have dealt only in items of this rare marvelous material. The elaborate monogram is in sterling silver and is an entwined A and H, could be read either as HA or AH. The case’s framework is also silver. Measurements noted on the photos. Will work for either spectacles and evening necessities (car key, credit card), or for cigars as was originally intended.
Very good to excellent condition for age and materials type. There is some hairline to the old very thin and fine leather, which is adhered to a carved out wooden form to support it. It’s stable but to be noted. You can see it in our images. Likewise, there are a few rim areas of small loss to the old shagreen, a dark spot or two. But for age and type, this presents remarkably well and isa beauty to see, display or use. The left side of the interior silk pouch is fine, the right one has splits along the crease so it comes forward and is not perfect, even though the silk looks wonderful otherwise.
Our photos are large and clear. We do expect our customers to review them all, evaluate the item based on both our description and our images. Thanks for all the compliments - we love what we do! Antiques & Uncommon Treasure - all the best, all the time!
