A superb Art Deco era (c.1900-1920) French match striker, vesta or case. Case is a sensuous form that slides in the hand with such style. Opens like a retracting envelope to reveal your striking matches within, and makes a statement at the same time. The silver is not sterling but is a heavy silver plate so looks the part. The interior has a gilding that I imagine is only brass. The shagreen (leather from the belly of a stingray) is very fine, and remains in very good condition, no losses or lifts, no shrinkage issues. Very fine piece! Perfect for someone who enjoys both ritual and rhythm of cigar or pipe smoking. A wonderful idea for a gift, as well.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type, no disruption to the very fine old shagreen. This one is in wonderful condition throughout, as you can see in our images. Measurements noted on the photos.
