Lovely antique to vintage Italian 8 1/8" tall altar style freestanding crucifix, a silvered bronze Christ figure on the cross with colorful floral & Instruments of the Passion micro mosaic inlays! I just love these old Italian micro mosaics, some quite old and works of masters, some made for the Grand Tour traveler as souvenirs and this piece would fall in between or to the latter. A wonderful little piece, unique in the size for a freestanding work and the bottom is somewhat crudely engraved as a remembrance for the traveler. Mostly legible, it reads "Rome le 15 Fevrier 1934, Jean Gabert ... Pompeii". That said, this engraving doesn't mean the piece was actually made in 1934, likely made earlier and just purchased by the traveler then. The mosaics on this one have a little larger glass tiles or "tesserae" than you find in the earliest pieces but they're wonderful nonetheless and include Instruments of the Passion. The center red mosaic features the interlaced letters "X" and "P", often used as a symbol for Christ (the first two letters in Christ's name in Greek (Χριστός or Christos) are X and P), Christianity and Christians. Known as the Chi-Rho and used by the Greek emperor Constantine. I'm not Catholic so I'm hoping all of that is correct :). A beautiful piece and one of two that we're adding this week so be sure to browse some while you're with us. Thanks!
Very good condition. There appear to be a few missing glass tesserae just to the left of Christ's feet, possibly one or two elsewhere but wonderful as you can see. There is also a bit of corrosion, a few spots here and there, to the silver or nickel plating. See pictures for all measurements.
