Gorgeous & rare antique French c. late 1700s 3pc writer's set including wax seal or sceau, dip pen and letter opener with hallmarked 18k gold on silver "vermeil" handles and all set in the original fitted travel etui or presentation box! The handles on this elegant set is fine old French hallmarked silver vermeil (18k gold over sterling silver) and it is marked with the tiny boar's head punch marks that guarantee them to be .800/1000 pure silver. There are also tiny silversmith marks though they're not quite clear enough for me to find reference. No matrix or monogram on the wax seal so one could even have their own engraved there for use or as a fabulous gift set. The blade of the letter opener is a work of art, deeply acid-engraved baroque scrolls popular from the time of Louis XV. And all that is missing is the one tip or nib, which can be easily bought in the size you want to use, at any art supply store. Superb set!
Very good to excellent condition on the actual writer's tools in this beautiful set. The box is showing age but still in wonderful condition all things considered. It's in a dark green leather with tooled and gilt embossed decoration on the lid. The two small clasps on the front are missing but the interior is well preserved. The writer's tools that are of importance, but it's always wonderful to find them in the original presentation box. The 3 writer's tools are all in fine condition with no damage other that slight bending to the curved pen tip holder and some dark corrosion and/or tarnish marks on the letter opener's blade. Elegantly crafted and well preserved. Measurements are noted on the photos.
